Bruce Asbestos

Bruce Asbestos Bio

Bruce's intention is to produce work and exhibitions that live out the ideals of a flat culture - in which the old notions of high and low (and established and temporary) culture are compressed into a flat plane in which one can move effortlessly across, moving between disciplines and media with excitement, gusto and aplomb.

High up in Bruce's ideals is a light industry complex that produces cultural artefacts and experiences, which have the ability to connect to a multitude of people. Half of the top floor is a studio with light airy windows, the other half is a film and recording studio. The first floor is be a workshop and offices and the ground floor a heavy workshop, storage area, reception rooms (which double up as a bar/ stage area) and a gallery. On the roof are a series of gardens in geometric forms, a swimming pool and cafe. As a package this complex will function as a physical representation of values of cultural production within a flat society. An additional benefit to the complex is that it focuses the mind on a specific unifying task, that of producing the complex itself.

During Studying Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University, Bruce completed a five-month scholarship at Musashino University, Tokyo. On the day of leaving Fine Art, Bruce started studying a three-month intensive business course, before going on to setup artist run projects Stand Assembly Studios, Moot Gallery and My House Gallery. During this time he worked in collaboration with Hannah Conroy, with whom he had solo exhibitions in Croatia, Spike Island, Bristol, and City Gallery Leicester.

Bruce runs Trade, a gallery and online archive of interviews and is studying MA Fine Art (AHRC scholarship) at Nottingham Trent, Nottingham
