Complex Image
VARIATIONS: Unrefined Complex Sketch, 2010
Pen, Paper

The Complex produces cultural artefacts and experiences, which have the ability to connect to a multitude of people. Half of the top floor is a studio with light airy windows, the other half is a film and recording studio. The first floor would be a workshop and offices and the ground floor a heavy workshop, storage area, reception rooms (which double up as a bar/ stage area) and a gallery. On the roof are a series of gardens in geometric forms, a swimming pool and cafe. As a package this Complex will function as a physical representation of values of cultural production within a flat society.

The Complex is a floating cube (because the location has not yet been defined) in which the edges have been stretched to heighten the sense of perspective.
A flock of birds live on the roof.

VARIATIONS are based on a random selection of images, actions, summaries and ideas that are repeated and joined in different ways. The strongest of these elements are combined with other elements, producing alliances, collections, sets and amalgamations of things, weaker ideas fall by the wayside, or get propelled to the forefront.

Each development (be it a panting, performance, text or film or other) also creates orphaned ideas, images and actions. Each point of presentation also adds more (and takes away) images and intentions from the stock, referencing itself, spewing different combinations of ideas forward.

Building and collapsing in on itself the VARIATIONS, dart in each and every direction, becoming concrete and legible at one point and then fleeting and incomprehensible at the next. A seeping slimy liquid, the same ideas or images arrive at the point of presentation in a multitude of arrangements - a glooping flow of stuff forced in particular directions by gravity, time, opportunities, energy, finance, expectation and exposure.

The meaning and re-presentation of VARIATIONS is also in movement, new ideas crash with old ones, documentation is warped or destroyed, actions forgotten.

Starting at the basis of visual imagery of things in the world, a cloud (physical things), a triangle (geometric forms), a celebrity (pop image), each part acts like a letter in an alphabet, distinct things that combine to make distinct words, and then sentences then visual phrases.
